Professor Steven L. McKnight is the Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry at UT Southwestern Medical Center where he has led an active research laboratory since 1995. From 1992 to 1995, Dr. McKnight was Director of Biology at Tularik, Inc., a company he co-founded in 1991. Previously he was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Dr. McKnight is recognized as a world leader in gene regulation, based in part on his discovery of leucine zipper proteins. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. McKnight is the recipient of many awards, including induction into the Hall of Honor at The University of Texas at Austin, College of Natural Sciences and the Monsanto Award from the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. McKnight served on the Board of Directors for Tularik from its inception through its acquisition by Amgen in 2004. He also co-founded and served as a board member for Cumbre, Inc. Dr. McKnight holds a B.S. in biology from The University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. in biology from the University of Virginia.
